Iran has taken a decisive step toward tackling its deepening water imbalance by launching operational action plans for six national strategies aimed at reducing agricultural water consumption. The first draft of these plans is expected within a month, according to a senior official.
Seyyed Baqer Mahmoudi, Deputy for Planning and Economics at the Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (TAT), said the initiative follows a presidential directive issued after comprehensive studies by the University of Tehran. Last year, the President placed the water crisis at the top of the national agenda, leading to the formulation of 20 strategies—six of which were assigned to the Ministry of Agriculture for implementation.
The ministry has entrusted TAT with drafting the action plans. Specialized working groups, comprising researchers and experts from relevant bodies, have already held four meetings to consolidate proposals focused on improving water productivity and reducing consumption.
Mahmoudi confirmed that the proposed measures are now under expert review and finalization. He expressed hope that the initial version of the action plan would be ready within the next month for further approval and execution, marking a critical step in addressing the country's pressing water challenges.
