Iran's energy sector is executing an accelerated reconstruction program at the South Pars gas field, following damage to refinery infrastructure during recent military strikes, as authorities scramble to restore production capacity before the winter heating season.
According to official estimates, the attacks removed some 230 million cubic meters per day from national gas output. The Oil Ministry has set a target of recovering 100 million cubic meters of that capacity within the coming months, with Minister Mohsen Paknejad emphasizing that restoration efforts are prioritized ahead of peak seasonal demand.
The National Iranian Oil Company, alongside its gas and upstream subsidiaries, has mobilized domestic contractors and engineering firms to rebuild affected processing units. In a notable operational achievement, three production trains of the Phase 14 refinery were returned to service within just ten days of the strikes. Debris removal at the third and fifth refineries has also been completed, while reconstruction of the Phase 4 and 5 facilities has now entered the execution phase following an agreement with a consortium of local contractors.
In an unprecedented move, the National Iranian Gas Company has assumed responsibility for rebuilding two damaged refineries, with a dedicated supervisory task force established to coordinate efforts and expedite early commissioning. Officials noted that the supply disruption had affected 11 provinces and over three million domestic and commercial subscribers.
Crucially, offshore production from South Pars platforms has continued uninterrupted throughout the reconstruction process, with maintenance overhauls and development activities proceeding in parallel. The strategy reflects a three-pronged operational approach: sustaining existing output, restoring lost refinery capacity, and reinforcing platform infrastructure for winter conditions.
While full capacity recovery will take time, the rapid return of Phase 14's trains and the accelerated reconstruction timeline for other facilities underscore the sector's focus on minimizing supply risks. With winter approaching, the success of these efforts will be critical to stabilizing Iran's domestic gas network and avoiding widespread shortages.
