In a display of cultural diplomacy and enduring friendship, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Tehran hosted a vibrant reception on Thursday, September 10, commemorating South Korea’s National Day and Armed Forces Day. Held at the Ambassador’s residence, the event brought together Iranian officials, diplomats, and cultural figures for an evening that celebrated the deep-rooted ties between Tehran and Seoul.
Guests were welcomed by Ambassador Kim Junpyo and his wife, Mrs. Shin Eunah, alongside Deputy Head of Mission Eunkyung Park and Military Attaché Jung Heejin. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a striking painting of the traditional Korean sun, moon, and five peaks—inscribed with “Love From Korea”—setting the tone for a night dedicated to cultural harmony.
Ambassador Kim reflected on 64 years of diplomatic relations, recalling the 1970s and 80s when over 20,000 Korean workers contributed to Iran’s infrastructure, while Iran played a vital role in Korea’s economic rise. He noted the symbolic “20” recurring throughout his tenure: 20 high-level exchanges, $20 million in aid, 20 cultural events, and scholarships for 20 Iranian students annually. “Behind every number are people,” he emphasized, underscoring the importance of investing in human connections.
Quoting the Persian poet Saadi, he remarked, “A friend is one who takes the hand of a friend in distress,” explaining why the Korean Embassy chose to remain in Iran during challenging times.
The evening’s theme, “Love,” was echoed in a current exhibition at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art inspired by the ancient Persian epic Kushnameh, and a forthcoming performance by the Mithra Orchestra blending Korea’s Arirang with Iranian love songs.
Hamid Ghanbari, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister for Economic Diplomacy, reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to preserving the friendship, citing shared capabilities across political, cultural, and scientific fields.
A highlight of the night came when Ambassador Kim Junpyo took to the stage and performed two famous Persian songs live: “Soltane Ghalbha” (King of Hearts) and “Porsun Porsun” (Asking, Asking/ literally “Asking here and there”). His remarkable live performance deeply moved the audience and drew enthusiastic applause. A dinner featuring both Korean and Iranian cuisine followed, delighting guests with its flavors and aromas.
The event underscored the Korean Embassy’s active cultural diplomacy, following recent initiatives like the Korea-Iran Calligraphy Exhibition and International Museum Day celebrations. Through such efforts, the bond between Tehran and Seoul continues to flourish.
